Cultural
Exchange Program

In 2019 I helped begin my second international internship exchange program through the United States Department of State. This exchange brought 18 students and three teachers from Bosnia and Herzegovina to Dayton for three weeks of interethnic relationship building and cultural exchange.

Internship
Exchange Program

In 2017 I helped begin an international internship exchange program with students from the Dayton Regional STEM School and two universities in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina in partnership with The Entrepreneurs Center (in Dayton) and INTERA Technology Park (in Mostar). I have chronicled the exchange program on my blog and hope it will become an annual program connecting Dayton and Bosnia and Herzegovina through entrepreneurship and cultural exchange. Check out this story from the Dayton Dailly News for a snapshot of what the experience entailed.

DRSS Local Econ Podcast Project

I presented on this project I do bi-annually with my economics class at the Council for Economic Education annual conference in Baltimore in  2013. You can find my presentation materials here. Check out the Facebook page, and if you're interested in doing this project yourself, please check out the note I wrote linking to the materials I use when I do this each year. You can also find us on iTunes and subscribe to the podcast, and if you're interested in allowing students to interview you, please sign up here.

POSTER Project

While teaching 10th grade world history I partnered with Language Arts teacher Jenn Reid and Art teacher Jenny Montgomery as to teach students about many of the conflicts and genocides of the 20th century. This culminates in a poster project (described in the video, with samples below) for the genocides and a letter to their Member of Congress about the Israeli Palestinian Conflict, a unit which I presented on at the National Council for the Social Studies annual conference in 2013. Posters are displayed at the Dayton International Peace Museum and Wright State University's Educational Resource Center. In 2015 students donated the proceeds of their poster auction to United to End Genocide, which also did a story about the project. See all of the posters at the link below.

Student-produced documentary about the Nature Trail Project
NEW LEAF Arboretum

One of the foundational pillars of the Dayton Regional STEM School is the idea that projects should be authentic and have value outside the classroom. One of the integrated units that is still ongoing that I'm proud to be a part of started out as the "Nature Trail Project," described in the video to the left. You can read my blog about this experience here and see how social studies fits into STEM education at DRSS. Also, please check out the student-developed website and Facebook page about the project. As of early 2014, we are hopeful that we may be able to seek out grants from Ohio EPA to help restore our ecosystem as we learn what global citizenship means in practice.
