2013 National Council for the Social Studies

Guest Speakers

I have many guest speakers speak to the students each year. You can listen to some of them below and hear the perspective they bring to the conflict:

Angela Frydman - Member of the Dayton Jewish Federation who presented students with the Israeli perspective

Hadil Issa - An international student from the University of Dayton who presented students with the Palestinian perspective

Bart Campolo - Urban Minister from Telos, an organization that describes itself as "Pro-Israel, Pro-Palestinian, and Pro-Peace"

Dr. Vaughn Shannon - Political Science Professor from Wright State University who spoke to the students about the US role/stake in the conflict

Colleague Kevin Lydy and I gave a poster presentation at the 2013 Annual National Council for the Social Studies in St. Louis, MO on Teaching Controversial Issues. Each year I do an integrated unit with my colleague, Jenn Reid, where students write letters to their members of congress explaining their views on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. Below are useful links to get you started if you wish to do a similar unit in your own classroom, with explanations next to each. You can find our presentation materials here.

Here's a blog post from a week in 2015 when I had three guest speakers, including form US Congressman Steve Austria, come speak to the students about the conflict.

LDC Pacing Guide - This link will take you to a page where you can download a PDF created by Jenn Reid and me explaining the pacing for the unit and when to use which of the materials below. Start here to understand the project. LDC stands for "Literacy Design Collaborative," a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation initiative seeking to infuse writing into non-language arts classes across the curriculum.

Combined Content Area Rubric - This is the rubric Jenn and I use for this project each year, with both Language Arts and World History components.

Key Doc Analysis - This is a sample Primary Document Analysis worksheet, which students complete for many primary documents that we analyze. A great source for primary documents can be found at procon.org.

Notetaking Guide - This is one of the note-taking guides I have students use throughout our studies of this conflict. They will likely need multiple pages of this handout.

Quick Reference Guide - This guide enables students to quickly denote which term is used for similar things on both sides of the conflict.

Sample Student Work - High-quality example of a student letter.

Sample Student Work - "Not yet" student work that needs revision.

Israel/Palestine Wiki - I created this wiki for students to use, which houses many helpful resources/materials I've found for them about the conflict. Feel free to download anything off of here and use in your own classroom.
