2018 Ohio Council for the Social Studies Conference
I gave this presentation at the annual social studies conference for OCSS members entitled "Mediating Civil Discourse: Classroom Strategies from the Field." This presentation was based on the crossover I saw as both a teacher and mediator as a volunteer and provides participants with an overview of Transformative Mediation.
Through the presentation, participants explore how the underlying beliefs of the Transformative Approach can provide a framework for understanding the increasingly partisan society we are living in today. More importantly, teachers are introduced to some of the tools that mediators use and learn how these tools can be utilized in any classroom, with the goal of helping students go from conflict to conversation about controversial topics.
